With the increase of vegan and vegetarian lifestyles has come an evolution of plant-based and meat-free snacks.
It turns out, there are plenty of options available to make up a ‘what was once a meat product’ turned ‘meat-free product’.
Convenience stores are also making available snacks that are vegan and ‘vego’ friendly. For example, the 7-Eleven plant-based pie and sausage roll. Pie face, which is stocked at service stations, is also offering plant-based pies and sausage rolls.
So what on earth do they replace the meat with?
With a little investigating, I discovered some of the most-used ingredients, to replace meat.
The ‘Mexi’ plant-based pie from Pie face is made using kidney beans, plant-based mince, mushrooms, tomatoes, onion and garlic. Similarly, the sausage roll they provide is also made up of plant-based mince, mushrooms, tomatoes, onion and garlic.
Plant-based mince
Curious to know what is in plant-based mince? Fair!
A mince that is new to Woolworths – Funky Fields, creates plant-based mince. The list of ingredients they state on their website includes soy, wheat protein, fat from coconuts, almonds, tomato, porcini mushrooms, and the use of beetroot for colour.
Another plant-based mince company, The Meatless Farm Co, produce a range of plant-based products. They list pea protein, soya protein, caramelised carrot concentrate, rice protein, yeast extracts, and a number of other ingredients as being used to make up the meat-free mince.
For those in a loving relationship with the classic beef pie, rest assured, the plant-based options are doing the old favourites great justice.
