The official start to summer retail trade has kicked off with a clear message to consumers to support and enjoy local.

New Sunrise partnered with COSBOA, ACAPMA, Deputy Prime Minister McCormack and the Minister for Small and Family Business, the Hon Michaelia Cash, to launch the GO LOCAL FIRST Local Legends’ lunch.

On 4-6 December, New Sunrise retailers across Australia supported the event by holding their own local legends lunches in their own stores, supported by the New Sunrise management and staff.

In the shadows of last year’s devastating summer impacted by bushfires, drought and floods, the Local Legends’ Lunch campaign is an opportunity to show support and gratitude to the locally owned and independent businesses across Australia.

“New Sunrise Group are delighted to support and partner in the Local Legends’ Lunch through our locally-owned servos,” said New Sunrise Group Chief Executive, Steve Cardinale, whilst celebrating the day at Sunrise Convenience Vineyard.

“Independent servos play a critical role within their community. We’re often first to open and last to close – at night and in times of crisis. This is a fantastic opportunity to have some fun this weekend, get together with some friends, watch the cricket, enjoy a BBQ, and support local business”.

Across Sydney, Budget Earlwood celebrated the event with an afternoon of fun for their customers, with free Donuts and Muffins supplied by Balfours, and sandwiches supplied by Handmade Food Co. In Northern NSW, the team at Shell Yamba hosted their very own sausage sizzle with snags and bread from their local butcher and bakery. In the southern NSW in the township of Pambula, Tea Tree Roadhouse organized a Local Legends Lunch BBQ Christmas event to thank their local community, with locally sourced products, giveaways, prizes and lots of fun. Similar activities occurred across the country, including at BP Edmonton in QLD, Liberty Seaford and Edinburgh in South Australia, X-Roads Cranebrook in NSW, Kerry’s Korner Store in Caloundra in QLD, BP Junction Hill in NSW and many others.

On 5 December, COSBOA Chair and ACAPMA Chief Executive Mark McKenzie joined Federal MP for Cunningham Sharon Bird, Ryan Park (State MP Keira) and Paul Scully (State MP for Wollongong) together with Santhosh and Caltex Fairy Meadow to support the event.

“After what has been a long and difficult year for all Australians, having a BBQ or lunch get together with friends and family this weekend is something to look forward to, ringing in the start of summer”, Mr McKenzie commented.

“GO LOCAL FIRST when you head out to buy your supplies. Pick up chips, ice, lollies and a gas bottle from the servo, grab your sausages from a small locally owned butcher, and the beers or wine from a small local producer,” Mr McKenzie concluded, a timely reminder as we head into the Christmas period.
