This week Viva Energy is taking part in Sustainability Week 2024, an initiative to cultivate a culture of sustainability across its workforce of 14,700 employees.
Viva Energy has embarked on a journey of education, engagement, and action, highlighting various aspects of environmental stewardship and encouraging its staff to embrace sustainable practices in their personal and professional lives.
This year’s Sustainability Week features a comprehensive five-day program, each day dedicated to a specific theme and accompanied by activities designed to inspire positive change. The schedule is as follows:
Day 1: Biodiversity and the value of ecosystems
On the first day, employees explored the importance of biodiversity and the value of ecosystems. As part of the activity, staff were encouraged to make more sustainable choices for lunch by opting for home-grown ingredients, purchasing local or seasonal foods, or enjoying a vegetarian meal.
Day 2: New energies such as EV and hydrogen powered vehicles
Day two shone a spotlight on new energies, including electric vehicles (EVs) and hydrogen-powered vehicles, with a special focus on Viva Energy’s hydrogen-refuelling station, which is being built in Geelong. Employees celebrated sustainable transportation by recognising those who make eco-friendly journeys to work, whether by walking, cycling, using public transport, or car-pooling.
Day 3: Cultural diversity
Diversity is at the heart of Viva Energy’s workforce, and on the third day, employees celebrated their cultural heritage and diversity. Team members have the opportunity to share information about their backgrounds, places of birth, and experiences from around the world, fostering a sense of unity and understanding among colleagues.
Day 4: Low-carbon fuels
Day four will focus on low-carbon fuels and waste reduction. Staff will be challenged to prepare a no-waste lunch, minimising single-use plastic waste and disposable bottles, while embracing sustainable alternatives.
Day 5: New retail outlet initiatives like rooftop solar and LED lighting upgrades
The final day of Sustainability Week will highlight innovative retail outlet initiatives, such as rooftop solar installations and LED lighting upgrades. Employees will be invited to make sustainability pledges on behalf of their teams, committing to ongoing efforts to reduce environmental impact and promote sustainable practices.
Throughout the week, Viva Energy has aimed to foster a sense of collective responsibility for environmental conservation and sustainability, empowering its workforce to make meaningful contributions towards a greener future.
Speaking about Sustainability Week 2024, Viva Energy Head of Sustainability Rob Mackie commented: “At Viva Energy, we recognise the importance of sustainability in everything we do. Sustainability Week is an opportunity for us to engage, educate, and inspire our employees to embrace eco-conscious practices both at work and in their personal lives. Together, we can make a positive impact on our planet and create a more sustainable future for generations to come.”
