Nestlé moves to recyclable or reusable packaging

Nestlé says it aims to make all its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025, so that none of it – including plastics – ends up in landfill or as litter.

“Plastic waste is one of the biggest sustainability issues the world is facing today,” Nestlé CEO Mark Schneider said. “Tackling it requires a collective approach. We’re committed to finding improved solutions to reduce, reuse and recycle.”

In Australia and New Zealand, Nestlé has begun implementing new labelling to help consumers recycle their packaging correctly, with the labels being used on Allen’s lollies this year.

“Nestlé has been a leader in adopting the Australasian recycling label information,” Nestlé Oceania CEO Sandra Martinez said.

Nestlé focuses on three core sustainability areas: eliminating non-recyclable plastics, encouraging the use of plastics that allow better recycling rates, and eliminating or changing complex combinations of packaging materials.

Saying it recognises the need for developing a circular economy, Nestlé claims to be committed to playing an active role in the development of well-functioning collection, sorting and recycling schemes.

The company will also work with value-chain partners and industry associations to explore different packaging solutions to reduce plastic usage, facilitate recycling and develop new approaches to eliminate plastic waste, label its plastic product packaging with recycling information to help consumers dispose of it in the right way, and promote a market for recycled plastics by continuing to increase the proportion of recycled plastics in its packaging.
