The Australian Financial Review and IBISWorld have released their Australia’s ‘Top 500 Private Companies for 2015-16’ list and revealed a combined revenue of $197 billion for the period.
The list includes public unlisted companies, partnerships, associations and private companies. To compile the list, IBISWorld gathered data through primary research, company reports lodged with ASIC and its own appraisals of company revenue based on historic data and industry analysis. Visy was the top private company listed, with revenue of $5.7 billion.
“The companies in this year’s list grew an average of eight per cent from the previous year, with ‘Top 500’ private companies in Victoria topping the list at 34.5 per cent of the total revenue, followed by NSW at 32.7 per cent and Queensland at 15.9 per cent,” IBISWorld lead researcher Julia Saladino said.
“Manufacturers, construction companies, wholesale traders, retailers, financial and insurance service providers and professional, scientific and technical service providers were the industries most represented in this year’s ‘Top 500 Private Companies’ list.”
7-Eleven Stores were the leading convenience retailers, with revenue of $3.82 billion, although this represented a 1.4 per cent decline. Adelaide convenience store chain Peregrine Corporation sat at 14th on the list after a 15.2 per cent bounce in revenue ($1.9 billion). Ritchies IGAs revenue grew to $855.77 million, placing the company 45th.
