Government’s Youth Jobs PaTH program supported by retail industry

Earlier this week, the Australian Retailers Association (ARA) Executive Director Russell Zimmerman showed his support for the government’s Youth Jobs PaTH (Prepare-Trial-Hire) program.

According to a statement released by the ARA, the organisation has been working with the federal government to help young people in Australia looking to enter the retail industry with internships through the Youth Jobs PaTH program. The program is being run by Employment Minister Michaelia Cash.

“We are very excited to be a part of the PaTH program,” Mr Zimmerman said. “Our retailers are already major employers of young people and these PaTH internships will now provide another way that employers can give young people a fair go.

“With the diverse range of careers in the retail industry, we need our young staff not only to have basic vocational skills, but also a wide range of qualifications before they can start on the job.”

Employment Minister Michaelia Cash says the best form of welfare available for those who want to work is a job.

“We are implementing practical measures so that those looking for work have the experience and skills they need to secure a job,” she said.

“The retail trade industry employs more than 1.2 million people. It is also the largest employer of young Australians. Today’s announcement will provide more opportunities for thousands of young Australians to learn new skills and showcase their talents in this industry.

“The Turnbull government is pleased that a respected industry leader like the ARA is backing young Australians who are willing to put up their hands and have a go.”

The ARA is said already to support people entering the retail industry through the Retail Institute’s Retail Ready Jobs Program and will now also work with the government’s PaTH program.

“It is great to see the Prime Minister today supporting young people looking for work in the retail sector as the industry can deliver a successful and diverse career,” Mr Zimmerman said.
