End Food Waste Australia makes new appointment

End Food Waste Australia (EFWA) has appointed Wendy Hughes to the newly created role, Director of Policy, Communications and Strategic Engagement.

With more than 20 years of leadership experience across government, agribusiness, higher education and the not-for-profit sector, Ms Hughes brings a depth of expertise to a role that is hoped to guide EFWA’s policy, research translation and strategic engagement efforts.

EFWA CEO Tristan Butt says Ms Hughes’ background makes her exceptionally well-placed to take on the role.

“Wendy brings a unique blend of policy expertise, evidence-based advocacy and a strong values-driven approach that aligns perfectly with our mission,” he says.

“This role will be critical in bridging the gap between industry and policy, ensuring that policy initiatives are translated into practical and impactful actions.”

Originally from regional South Australia and now based in Cairns, Ms Hughes has a longstanding interest in food systems and sustainability. Most recently, she served as the CEO of COUCH, a Queensland-based cancer support service. She has also held advocacy leadership roles with Cairns Regional Council, Far North Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils, and Advance Cairns, playing an integral role in securing significant government funding for regional infrastructure projects.

Ms Hughes, who will officially commence in the role on 21 July, says she’s looking forward to building on the organisation’s achievements and strengthening its impact.

“I’m honoured to be joining EFWA at such a pivotal time,” she says.

“I look forward to working with the team and our partners to drive bold, practical solutions that contribute to a more sustainable and food-secure future.”

In addition to Ms Hughes’ appointment, EFWA is also pleased to welcome Jack Moore as the new Chief Financial Officer, joining the organisation later this month. Mr Moore is an experienced CFO, with extensive experience across manufacturing, logistics, oil and gas, pharmaceuticals and waste management.
