Easter shoppers hopping into spend mode

Australia’s retailers are gearing up for the first holiday season without restrictions in two years as spending is forecast to reach $8.4 billion in the lead up to Easter.

National Retail Association Director of Industry Insights Rebecca Goulter says with school holidays underway and Easter approaching, retailers are banking on a bountiful April.
“The first holiday season without restrictions means retailers have an opportunity to recover from some of the economic downturns experienced in the past two years,” says Ms Goulter.

“Shoppers are set to splash $8.4 billion nationwide which is a significant boost for operators and businesses who have been struggling through the pandemic and east coast floods.”
As Easter marks the first opportunity in two years for family and friends to celebrate with minimal restrictions, the NRA anticipates consumers will take full advantage of the holiday.
“From our observations of consumer trends on food, alcohol and dining at restaurants and cafes, shoppers are expected splurge in the two weeks leading into Easter Sunday,” says Ms Goulter.

“Having eased restrictions in several states, a high vaccination rate and open borders we are seeing families return to regular holiday activities.

“Consumers seem to be making up for lost holiday time from the Omicron peak in December.”

“However, the inflated cost of living and increasing petrol prices are causing some families to approach the holidays with a conservative mindset, with many choosing to stay home.

“Families celebrating at home is great news for small retailers who can expect locals to spend money in their area,” says Ms Goulter.
