DoorDash Australia reveals 2023 End of Year Trend report

DoorDash Australia has unveiled its year-end trend report highlighting the top food, grocery, pet and pharmacy items ordered by Australians in 2023. Using data from DoorDash is wrapping up the year that was by giving us an insight into what Australians were ordering to their door in 2023.

“The 2023 year-end trend report data gives our teams an in-depth look inside the appetites of Australians and reveals the breadth of delivery items in demand. We’ve seen incredible support for local restaurants and these trends and consumer preferences allow us to adapt DoorDash’s offering, giving our customers a more tailored experience via the app years to come,” says DoorDash General Manager Australia Puji Fernando.

DoorDash highlights some of the biggest delivery trends over the past year.

DoorDash’s ‘End of Year Trend Report’ for 2023 includes:

  • Groceries: Groceries topped the order category for busy Australians in 2023, with

bananas in the number one position, followed by strawberries, milk, eggs, bread and toilet paper.

  • Shortest Delivery Distance Order: The shortest distance for a delivery order in Australia in 2023 was just 100 metres away.
  • Biggest Spenders: The most expensive order made on the platform in Australia this year was over $1000 worth of cat food.
  • Most Romantic: Sydney siders were the most romantic in 2023, ordering the most flowers in Australia via DoorDash.
  • Coffee Addicts: Melbourne held its place as the coffee capital of Australia, topping the list of most ordered coffees in 2023, followed by Sydney and Brisbane. The two most popular coffee orders were lattes and cappuccinos.
  • Taste Sensation: Aioli Sauce, BBQ Sauce, Ketchup and Mustard were the most ordered condiments on DoorDash in 2023.
  • Cat vs Dogs: Victorians and Queenslanders are the country’s biggest cat lovers, ordering the most cat products in 2023, predominantly cat litter. While NSW and WA are the country’s dog loving states – with most of the pet products ordered being dog food.
  • Staying in Sick: DoorDash’s pharmacy category proved crucial for those stuck at home sick, with some of the most ordered products being ibuprofen and paracetamol, pregnancy tests, Covid-19 tests, cold and flu tablets, throat lozenges, baby teething gel, enemas and hayfever relief.
  • Top order days: Tasmania and NSW opt for deliveries on Fridays to ring in the weekend, whereas the rest of the country set up their week ahead on a Sunday, ordering food, groceries and retail items.
