Coffee costs weigh on consumers’ minds

Rising costs of living have got 27% of Australian coffee drinkers worried that they’re spending too much on food and drink at coffee shops, according to a survey.

Comparison website Canstar Blue gathered consumer insights from over 1,600 Australians who visited a coffee shop chain in the past six months.

It found that the average weekly spend at coffee shops is $17.

“That’s $68 a month or $884 a year, which is nearly the cost of a holiday or yearly insurance premiums,” says Canstar Blue’s home and lifestyle expert Megan Birot.

“Majority of coffee chain patrons – 72% – buy coffee at least once a week so it’s not shocking to see that more than one quarter are worried that they’re spending too much money on coffee, food and other drinks at coffee shops – especially with rising prices for all necessities and modern day staples,” she says.

The survey also revealed that, despite the money worries, 28% of Aussies are willing to pay more for a higher quality coffee.

When it comes to Australia’s favourite type of coffee from a coffee shop chain, the winner is cappuccino (30%), followed by latte (21%) and flat white (15%).

“Australia’s love affair with flat white doesn’t ring true as cappuccino is the best type of coffee according to 30% of Aussies who frequent coffee shops while only 15% favour flat white,” Ms Birot says.

According to Canstar Blue’s customer satisfaction ratings, Muffin Break is Australia’s favourite coffee shop, having been awarded five stars for overall satisfaction as well as five out of seven other categories including value for money.

“Muffin Break is the only brand to receive five stars for value for money giving it that extra edge needed for a win amidst the cost-of-living crisis Australia is currently experiencing,” says Ms Birot.
