Iconic household brand Bickford’s is celebrating its sesquicentennial anniversary – looking back on 150 years of unwavering dedication to craftsmanship and delicious products that have delighted taste buds around the world.
A century and half is no small feat, from its humble beginnings as a family-run business in Adelaide, to becoming a globally recognised brand (that’s still family-owned), Bickford’s has consistently delivered on its promise of delivering authentic, high-quality flavours.
“For most Australians, a love of Bickford’s was imparted at a young age. The taste of your childhood, a staple of summer; it’s hard to imagine hot days without cold cordial in the backyard,” says Chris Illman, Bickford’s Group Marketing Manager.
“Over the past 150 years, Bickford’s has been present in creating memories and traditions that have been passed through generations; and that’s a milestone and legacy we’re all tremendously proud of,” he adds.
History
Founded in 1874 by William and Anne Bickford, who established an apothecary on Hindley Street in Adelaide, Bickford’s has grown from humble beginnings to become a global sensation, exporting its iconic Australian flavours to over 45 countries worldwide.
The business initially made and sold medicines and tonics as well as household items such as pickles, sauces and soaps. The company maintained a passion for purity, quality and integrity when the focus shifted to cordial production in 1874.
Today, the extensive Bickford’s range includes traditional cordials, premium juices, premium syrups, traditional sodas and dairy alternative ready-to-drink beverages.
Bickford’s products are all proudly Australian made at their premises in Salisbury-South, north of Adelaide – not far from where it all started.
“What sets Bickford’s apart is not just its rich history, but also its unwavering commitment to craftsmanship and operating as a family-owned, Australian business,” says Mr Illman.
“We have over 250 employees across the country – some of whom have been with the company for over 30 years, which is a testament to what Bickford’s stands for.”
Limited edition launches
As part of Bickford’s anniversary, a line-up of six new celebration flavours have launched, as well as the revival of a beloved fan-favourite flavour. Available nationally, the limited-edition celebration flavours include Lime Spider, Strawberry Lime Crush, Raspberry Ripple, Mango Coconut Splash, Pink Lemonade and Creamy Soda. Crafted using the finest quality ingredients, they blend a touch of nostalgia with a contemporary Bickford’s twist.
A Collector’s Edition Lime Cordial label will also be released to commemorate the 150th-anniversary, incorporating nostalgic elements from the past while paying homage to Bickford’s rich history. Bickford’s Lime Cordial remains one of the best-selling products to date since its inception in 1874, and was recognised by the National Trust of South Australia as a Heritage Icon in 2016.
