The Retail Council has congratulated Malcolm Turnbull on his appointment as Australia’s 29th Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Party. “The Retail Council thanks former prime minister Tony Abbott for his leadership and service to the Australian people,” Retail Council CEO Anna McPhee said. “His government began an important reform agenda, setting important economic fundamentals, and this momentum must continue if not grow apace.” Ms McPhee says Mr Turnbull’s commitment to provide economic leadership to support strong business confidence is welcome, and adds that the Retail Council looks forward to hearing more from the Prime Minister regarding the Government’s priorities and agenda. “For the Retail Council, part of a sector that employs 1.25 million Australians, a strong economy is a priority and should be the basis of action on tax reform, workplace relations and deregulation, to drive improved consumer and business confidence,” she said. “We look forward to working with Prime Minister Turnbull and his Government to achieve public policy and reform that will boost productivity, support employment growth, foster a competitive environment and ultimately make the economy stronger.” Horticultural body AUSVEG also congratulated Mr Turnbull on his appointment, on behalf of the vegetable and potato industries. “We look forward to a strong working relationship with the new Prime Minister to ensure any challenges that affect Australia’s vegetable and potato growers are adequately addressed, so that the industries can continue to prosper in the years ahead,” AUSVEG Deputy CEO Andrew White said.
