Last week, Viva Energy launched 100% Renewable Diesel with Cleanaway, which is running a six-month demonstration of the cutting-edge technology that can play a role in reducing emissions in the Australian transport sector.
The demonstration will involve Cleanaway operating two waste collections trucks – one municipal side-lift service in the City of Casey and a front-lift organics collection service. The project creates an opportunity for councils and businesses to immediately reduce their Scope 3 emissions.
The Renewable Diesel Viva Energy supplied was Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil, or HVO, an alternative to traditional fossil fuel-derived diesel. HVO can be made from waste feedstocks such as used cooking oil and can reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from vehicles by up to 90%.
Supply of Renewable Diesel supports Viva Energy’s commitment to help customers reduce their emissions and offers a sustainable alternative to regular diesel. Viva Energy’s product quality experts are working with the Australian Government on the development of a national fuel standard for Renewable Diesel.
Drawing on Viva Energy’s product quality, supply and logistics expertise, the Viva Energy Carbon Solutions team deployed a bespoke supply chain for this demonstration using 100% Renewable Diesel, which was sourced from Neste’s Singapore operations.

Renewable Diesel is a ‘drop-in’ solution, so businesses do not need to make equipment or infrastructure investments nor changes to the operation of their truck fleet. It can also be blended with regular diesel at different ratios or supplied undiluted depending on what decarbonisation goals companies are trying to achieve. At scale, these emissions savings have the potential to make a tangible difference to emissions reduction from on-road transport in Australia.”
The Viva Energy Carbon Solutions team is dedicated to working closely with customers across a broad range of industries to deliver lower carbon emissions solutions. By understanding the customer’s requirements, emission-reduction objectives, and operational requirements, the Carbon Solutions team is able to work with the client to offer lower carbon products, opt-in carbon neutral products and other services that are fit-for-purpose.
Viva Energy’s emissions-reduction partnership with Cleanaway also extends to the New Energies Service Station in Geelong, a hydrogen refuelling facility due to be operational later in 2024. Cleanaway will operate two hydrogen-powered waste collection vehicles in the Greater Geelong region utilising Viva Energy’s hydrogen refuelling infrastructure.
