Small business needs support to create jobs: COSBOA

The Council of Small Business Australia (COSBOA) this week called on the Government to focus on measures supporting small businesses in the May budget.

COSBOA’s 2017-18 budget-priorities statement includes more than 25 recommendations.

“If the Government is serious about investing in job growth, they will support these recommendations,” COSBOA CEO Peter Strong said.

“We have been pleased by proposals such as a push from the Small Business Minister, Michael McCormack, to extend the $20,000 instant asset write-off, but we need to continue a strategic approach to helping small business.”

COSBOA called on the Government to focus on five priority areas:

  • Encouraging investment and innovation.
  • Boosting productivity and efficiency.
  • Investing in equitable and quality education.
  • Overhauling the approach to training.
  • Working with small businesses on employment.

“We want the Government to be practical and adopt measures that make it less complicated for current small businesses, while also preparing the next generation of employers,” Mr Strong said. “Our focus on skills is also a focus on the future.

“We believe budget savings can be made simply by better spending of current fund allocations, particularly in the employment and vocational education portfolios. We need to see real action on economic growth and COSBOA is looking forward to working with ministers to get this budget right.”
