PepsiCo ANZ and REDcycle to turn chip packets into furniture

PepsiCo ANZ has partnered with REDcycle to transform discarded chip packets into a range of “sturdy products”, including furniture.

REDcycle processing partner, Replas, specialises in converting soft plastics into fitness circuits, outdoor furniture, bollards and signage, among other products.

All consumers have to do is drop off their chip packets and other soft plastics at participating supermarkets across Australia.

‘Performance with Purpose’

PepsiCo ANZ says it wants to deliver “sustainable long-term growth while leaving a positive imprint on society and the environment”. It calls this ethos “Performance with Purpose”.

One of its global Performance with Purpose goals is to achieve zero waste to landfill in direct operations by 2025 through “efficient and responsible waste management”.

PepsiCo ANZ claims its partnership with REDcycle complements its current strategy to eliminate waste by minimising the amount of materials used in packaging, and to help build a circular economy by promoting recycling. PepsiCo’s vision, the company says, is “to get to a place where plastics need never become waste”.

Ongoing commitment

PepsiCo ANZ says it has made a commitment to buy recycled-plastic products every year. It will donate these to parks, public places and schools, it says.

PepsiCo ANZ Environment Manager Janine Cannell said: “We’re so pleased to be working with REDcycle. This is a great opportunity for us to recover what would otherwise go to landfill and use the recycled materials to better the communities we operate in.”

REDcycle Director Liz Kasell added: “We’re delighted to have PepsiCo as REDcycle partners. We look forward to seeing what we can create together using recycled materials.”
