Franchising means big business for more than 94K small businesses in Australia

Franchising is the key support mechanism which has allowed more than 94K franchise outlets across Australia employing almost 600,000 Australians to survive the multiple challenges of recent times.

That’s one of the key take outs of the ‘2023 State of Franchise Report’ launched in Canberra.

As the report shows, in Australia today, there is a franchise operating in almost every type of business category.

Franchising now represents a $174 Billion segment in the domestic economy.

With franchising contributing $35.1 billion in wages to the Australian economy each year across the 1267 franchise systems active in Australia, franchising is the key structure that makes small business big business.

A delegation of 14 Franchise Council of Australia (FCA) members attended the Canberra launch with FCA Chair Brendan Green and CEO Matthew Monaghan for briefings with Small Business Minister the Hon Julie Collins, Shadow Minister for Small and Family Business the Hon Sussan Ley, and Treasury.

“Franchising is still one of the best mechanisms to enable small business to compete effectively against larger corporate businesses and we look forward to meeting with the Minister for Small Business the Hon Julie Collins as we launch our 2023 State of Franchise report,” says Franchise Council of Australia Chair Brendan Green.

“Our members are predominantly small businesses. With more than 94,000 franchise outlets across Australia employing almost 600,000 Australians and generating a massive $174 Billion each year, we are proud to be playing our role in Australia’s economy,” he said.

“Our members are the supermarkets, healthcare providers, educators, home services, travel businesses, cafes, restaurants, and takeaway stores on every high street in almost every community across the country, in addition to the many mobile services. Our members are the heartbeats that keep Australia’s economy and communities ticking.

“We are delighted to be Canberra-bound to continue the FCA’s ongoing advocacy in making sure the value of franchising in this country is understood and valued,” Mr Green said.
