BP Australia has announced they will no longer be stocking M+ rated magazines across 350 of its stores.
The decision was made after Melinda Liszewski from Collective Shout called out the service station chain for selling magazines with headlines such as: ‘Better than viagra’.
BP Australia replied to Collective Shout via Twitter: “Hi @CollectiveShout, we consulted with the business and can confirm that M+ rated magazines will no longer be stocked at our 350 company owned stores across Australia. R rated magazines have never been stocked in our company owned stores.”
This also followed a successful campaign against 7-Eleven which also sold the magazines People and Picture. These publications included headlines such as ‘X-rated Aussie Teens.’
Ms Liszewski welcomed BP’s announcement and said other retailers must take proactive steps towards a culture of respect for women and girls.
