Borrow by Huskee simplifies reuse

Reusable cup sharing system Borrow by Huskee has launched a new web app that lets customers borrow a cup without the need to download an app or create an account.

The new web feature is said to reduce one of the frictions that has long stood between coffee drinkers and reusable cup schemes, making it easier for people to try reusable cup sharing for the first time.

“We built Borrow by Huskee to make reuse the easy choice, not the extra step,” said Saxon Wright, Huskee co-founder and Chief Sustainability Officer at BioPak.

“By making it easier for people to try Borrow for the first time, we’re helping remove some of the friction around reuse and making it a more accessible option for everyday coffee drinkers.”

How it works

Instead of navigating an app store and creating a login, customers can scan a QR code, borrow a cup instantly through their phone’s browser, and return it at any participating location or smart bin.

The new web app provides a simple entry point for new and occasional users, providing a simple pathway for customers to start borrowing and, as they become regular users, move to the mobile app for the full Borrow experience.

The Borrow by Huskee mobile app will remain the more feature rich experience for regular borrowers, offering deposit free borrowing, extended borrow time, loyalty rewards, a cup library and a map of participating locations.

Sustainable expansion

Since launching in Barangaroo, Sydney last year, Borrow by Huskee has continued to expand, disrupting the reusable cup market with 35 cafes and 3 corporate buildings now running the system across Australia.

The scheme recently launched at Carriageworks in Sydney, where around 1600 reusable cups rotate across three vendors, diverting thousands of single-use cups from landfill on each market day.
