A new survey from the Good Food & Wine Show has confirmed that the rising cost of living is affecting how people wine and dine, with 71.7% of respondents reporting they are eating out less often.
The bulk of respondents also said that rising expenses are affecting their shopping and cooking patterns. 61.7% acknowledged they now spend more time shopping around for sale items, and 48.2% admitted they are now cooking more at home than they used to.
Almost 30% of those surveyed are stocking up on pantry staples to add flavour to any meal, and many (19.7%) are also looking for indulgences that will last for months.
The survey, carried out by Australia’s longest-running national food and wine event, was designed to reveal insights into how the country’s culinary habits are evolving.
Other trends to be highlighted were a growing preference for savoury snacks (56.6%) and the nation’s unwavering love for wine, with almost one-third of Australians admitting they would trade their morning coffee for an evening glass of wine, and 32% of us would give up chocolate before we gave up wine. Further, on a Friday night, over 39% of us would prefer to relax at home with a glass of vino than watch Netflix, eat out or entertain friends and family.
The Good Food & Wine Show will be held in Brisbane 25-27 October, followed by the Sydney and Melbourne Christmas markets later this year.
