Chevron Australia, as operator of the Gorgon Project, has welcomed the launch by the Western Australian (WA) Government of the Lower Carbon Grants Program – Gorgon Fund and GreenTech Hub.
The WA Government has established the grants program and technology hub to fund projects in WA that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions or support the development and commercialisation of lower carbon energy technologies.
The Gorgon Joint Venture is a founding contributor, committing A$40 million to the Lower Carbon Grants Program – Gorgon Fund and GreenTech Hub.
Chevron Australia General Manager Energy Transition David Fallon says the company was proud to support the grants program and green technology hub that would build on WA’s already significant role as a global energy provider.
“WA is already home to world-leading energy producers and businesses that supply state-of-the-art equipment to energy companies around the world.
The creation of the Lower Carbon Grants Program – Gorgon Fund and GreenTech Hub will help further grow critical technologies for the future,” Mr Fallon said.
“For Chevron, our goal in Australia is to be a leader in producing lower carbon intensity natural gas people rely on every day.
“At the same time, we’re exploring lower-carbon energy businesses to help sectors, such as heavy transportation and manufacturing, to achieve their lower carbon goals with solutions including carbon capture and storage, and hydrogen.
“Through partnership and collaboration between governments and industry, and initiatives such as these, we can meet the world’s energy and climate action goals.”
The WA Government will manage both the grants program and technology hub.
The A$40 million funding commitment is part of a package of measures that Chevron Australia has implemented in recognition of the historical carbon dioxide injection shortfall associated with the Gorgon Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) system.
The Chevron-operated Gorgon Project is a joint venture between the Australian subsidiaries of Chevron (47.33%), ExxonMobil (25%), Shell (25%), Osaka Gas (1.25%), Tokyo Gas (1%) and JERA (0.417%).
