Tap to Pay on phones is now available to Australian businesses using Clover by Fiserv. The new feature enables merchants to accept in-person, contactless payments seamlessly using only a mobile phone and the Clover Go app, with no extra hardware required.
The functionality allows for full payment flexibility for sole traders, mobile businesses, and micro-retailers across the country, allowing them to accept payments anywhere their customers are, quickly, securely, and with minimal setup.
“Bringing Tap to Pay on phone to Clover in Australia is a major milestone in our mission to help local businesses grow and thrive”, said Gavin Jones, Country Manager, Fiserv Australia.
“Whether you’re a sole trader working from your van, or a small retailer serving customers at the counter, Clover now gives you the tools to run and grow your business, right from your phone. This is just the beginning of our innovation rollout. We aim to create a smart system that makes doing business easier, so our customers can focus on the things that matter.”
Aussies prefer going cashless
Australia is now one of the most cashless nations in the world, creating the perfect environment for Apple Tap to Pay to thrive. Today, 54% of in-person transactions are made via contactless cards and a further 44 % through mobile wallets, with just 2% requiring chip and PIN. In 2022 alone, 95% of in-store card payments were contactless, up from around 85% in 2019, and mobile devices accounted for nearly a third of those transactions.
Digital wallet use is soaring, with transaction value rising from $126 billion in 2023 to $166.6 billion in 2024, and forecasted to surpass $200 billion in 2025. Australians are now making over four billion mobile wallet transactions annually, more than eleven times the number of ATM withdrawals, as cash continues its rapid decline.
For merchants, this represents a clear opportunity: Apple Tap to Pay on iPhone allows businesses to accept secure, contactless payments without additional hardware, enabling faster checkouts, reduced friction at the counter, and a seamless experience for the millions of Australians already paying with their phones and watches.
