SPAR launches nutrition app for customers

SPAR Spain has launched an app to offer its customers nutritional information about its products.

The international retail and convenience chain says the app is “part of its commitment to promoting healthy eating”.

Free of charge, the new app is called ‘SPAR, know what to choose’ (‘SPAR, saber elegir’ in Spanish). Its purpose, says SPAR, is enable customers to “make more informed decisions about the foods they eat”.

How it works

Customers scan the barcode on the side of a product, and the app then tells them all about it. The product information includes nutrition, environmental certifications and ingredients.

Crucially, it can also warn customers about any ingredients to which they might be allergic or sensitive. These include gluten, lactose, egg and peanuts. It can warn customers of up to 14 different allergens, SPAR claims.

It also enables customers to make what they see as more ethical choices by telling them if a product contains, for example, palm oil.

‘Commitment to healthy eating’

As well as providing nutritional information, the app will communicate with customers via in-store communications, direct mailings and social-media campaigns.

It will also give them the location of more than 1,000 SPAR stores and tell them which stock the particular product they’re after.

In a statement on its website, SPAR says it’s “always committed to innovation and the needs of consumers”. This new app, it claims, enables it to go “a step further … in its clear commitment to healthy eating”.
