Enhancing the offer for a local tourist destination

Lovey’s Grocers IGA Xpress Hawks Nest was awarded 2021 IGA Xpress Store of the Year. Store owner Peter Trappel spoke to Convenience World in an exclusive interview about getting the right balance of price and convenience to prosper.

Situated in a coastal beachside suburb in Tea Gardens, Lovey’s Grocers IGA Xpress Hawks Nest, NSW store (initially a Friendly Grocer store that had ceased operations) was opened in October 2015. Located on 46 Tuloa Avenue at Hawks Nest and around 500m from the beach, the store operates on 280sqm of trading area. The population of Hawks Nest is 1250 with the average age around 58 to 60 years.

“The challenge is trying to attract a local clientele,” says store owner Peter Trappel. “We also have a strong tourist trade, which sees the town triple in size from the onset of Boxing Day to the end of January school holidays. It’s a tourist trading town again at Easter and through the school holiday periods.”

The store houses around 4000 SKUs with a full supermarket offer including a fresh department, serviced deli, bakery, dairy, cheese, and a full range of groceries.
