BYO cups banned at cafes to reduce virus spread

One of the world’s largest coffee stores Starbucks is taking serious action when it comes to preventing the spread of coronavirus.

As stated on the Starbucks website, they have temporarily closed all  stores in Italy, until 3 April 2020.

“Over the coming days and weeks, our primary focus will be on supporting our partners, working to ensure they have the resources they need to look after themselves and their families during this period which we will evaluate on an ongoing basis,” read the statement on their website.

The Starbucks cafes in the Middle East and Africa are temporarily banning the use of personal cups or tumblers in their Europe, Middle Eastern and African stores.

“However, we will continue to honour existing discounts for anyone who brings in a personal cup.”

The stores are also increasing cleaning measures, to ensure the safety of their customers and employees.

Sydney café bans BYO cups

In following these events, Sydney café Bonnie Coffee Co has put a temporary band on reusable cups.

Posting on Instagram 1 day ago to explain their reasoning behind the decision, the café says:

“Firstly, to minimise the risk of transmission to customers and our workers. Secondly, a keep cup handed over the counter could be contaminated. This could in turn contaminate equipment that would then be used to prepare drinks for other customers.”

The café still offers their one-use cups, and their own reusable cups to purchase that have been properly cleaned before use.
