Australia’s ‘best brew’ revealed

Toby’s Estate, Carlos Escobar, wins the Australian Brewers Cup Championship.

The renowned Australian Coffee Championships have come to an end, with Toby’s Estate’s, Carlos Escobar, taking home the winning title of Australian Brewers Cup Champion. With his first participation in the Australian nationals, the newly crowned winner secured number one place with the highest scoring coffee of 93.5/100.

“Winning this title feels unreal! The talent behind Toby’s Estate and the passion that goes into our coffee development are nothing short of incredible, I couldn’t have done it without the entire team behind me. I’m looking forward to representing Australia at the World Brewers Cup,” says Mr Escobar.

After numerous delays due to the pandemic, the highly anticipated Australian Coffee Championships were finally able to converge in Melbourne, Victoria, and showcase the elite brewing skills and incredible calibre of coffee on offer from brewers around Australia.

The Australian Brewers Cup division was specifically about showing off the beauty of specialty coffee by traditional hand brewing. Not only was the judging criteria based on taste, but also on verbally telling a story and demonstrating skills in the cup.

Mr Escobar and the Toby’s Estate roasting team – Nich Rae and Josh Haidinger – spent months preparing for the competition, working on both the presentation and the expression of the coffee that Carlos served.

For the Toby’s Estate brand, it demonstrates the depth of talent the business has, alongside its range of specialty coffees that are available in Australia every year – releasing approximately seven new coffees each month.
