WA’s Chicken Treat celebrates 50 years

The iconic and much-loved Western Australian QSR Chicken Treat is celebrating its 50th birthday this week, having opened its first restaurant in the Perth suburb of Midland in 1976.

Chicken Treat CEO Jamie Stewart said Chicken Treat had famously grown to be a much-loved jester brand that created “unapologetically indulgent, lip-smackingly fun food”.

“Since Frank Romano opened the first restaurant half a century ago with his famous rotisserie chicken the brand had become synonymous with WA,” he said.

“There are 62 Chicken Treat locations now located as far south as Albany, as far east as Kalgoorlie and as far North as Broome.”

Anniversary celebrations

To celebrate the Golden Anniversary Chicken Treat has gone bold and wrapped another WA icon, the Crystal Swan, into a giant golden present that can be seen up and down the Swan River.

The hunt is also on to find WA’s biggest Chicken Treat fan.

“We have a cult-like following,” Mr Stewart said.

“Talk to anyone from the west coast and they know Chicken Treat so we want to hear the stories whether they are sweet, saucy, sentimental or seriously funny so we can find the biggest fan.”

For the first time Chicken Treat is selling its famous Chicken Salt in-store for a limited time.

Limited-time anniversary Chicken Roll Box, Hawaiian Tender Box, and Tender Tempta Box, are also available.

Reputation for doing things differently

Across fifty years it is estimated that Chicken Treat has served a staggering 234 million hot potato chips, 116 million pieces of rotisserie chicken, 53 million chicken rolls, and 23 million pineapple fritters.

Mr Stewart said in five decades Chicken Treat had done everything from launch a world-first donut burger, gone viral with Betty the tweeting live chicken, and even catered a wedding at the bride and groom’s request.

“Chicken Treat has built a reputation for doing things a little differently and this is a moment to celebrate our past and look to the future,” he said.

“We are focused on opening new stores, expanding the network, and exciting our customers with new foodie delights,” he said.
